NRSP Bahawalpur Region
The Programme area of NRSP Regional Office Bahawalpur comprises of twelve districts; Bahawalpur, Bahawal Nagar, Rahim Yar Khan, Lodhran, Vehari, Sahiwal, Toba Tek Singh, Pakpattan, Muzafar Grah, Khanewal, Multan and Matiari (Sindh).Most of the population of these tehsils is inhabited in big villages known as chaks and mouzas and the remaining is scattered in small hamlets. The main casts / baraderis in the area areSyed, Qureshi, Baloch, Pathan, Rajput/Jat, Gujjar, Arain, and Bhatti. * Organize able households are those households that are willing to get organized if mobilized by
57% of the agriculture land of programme area is irrigated with canal water and the remaining 43% is irrigated with tube wells. Cotton is one of the major cash crops. In addition to that wheat, sugarcane, rice, maize, jawar, bajra, mung, mash and oil seeds are also grown here.
Majority of the rural population comprises of small farmers. Small land holding is one of the main problems of the growers of the area. The small farmers of the area are unable to increase their agriculture productivity due to poor access to essential technical knowledge and finances to purchase agriculture inputs on right time and right price.
The rural community especially the small farmers also face problems like deterioration of soil fertility, pest resistance, pollution of ground water. due to poor management of natural resources. The high population growth trend and low yield has increased unemployment in the rural area.
The literacy rate in rural areas for males is 38.7% against 16.3% for females. However the literacy ratio is much higher in urban areas, when compared with rural areas for male and female i.e. 63.8% and 46.5% respectively.
